2014 History

Hockey in January

During January we had two excellent evenings at the hockey, the first in conjunction with PragueConnect and the second held jointly with the British Chamber of Commerce. As always these were really enjoyable events allowing us to watch the hockey from the VIP bar with unlimited food, nibbles and drinks. There really is nothing like it!

These events are always popular. They are kid-friendly, and they are also good for entertaining your clients (if you can't afford your own corporate box) and very reasonably priced.

Waitangi Day & Australia Day

We've celebrated Australia Day and Waitangi day with two great events in January.

The more formal 'official' event took place on Thursday 30 January. This will included a gourmet dinner - with top quality Australian and New Zealand wine - and was held at the Kempinski Prague.  The event was one of the most heavily attended of recent years and the New Zealand Ambassador and the Australian Consul General were also present.

There is an excellent gallery of photos from this event on Facebook:

For the beer drinkers we offered a less formal beer and buffet evening at the James Joyce on Saturday the 25th.

ANZAC Day

Our two ANZAC Weekend events were a great success this year..

The Ceremony was held as usual at the Commonwealth War Graves at Olšanské hřbitovy. This year's ceremony was special for a number of reasons.  As well as a detachment from the Czech Army and consular representatives from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey, senior representatives of the Czech state were also present including the Chief of General Staff.  A large musical ensemble from Wesley College in Melbourne also performed a selection of very moving pieces, and attendance this year was very high.  Excluding the Wesley group we estimated that there were around 100 present, which could well be a new record.

Next year will be even bigger as it is the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli.

There are a selection of photos of the event on facebook here.

Poppy-day-310x270.jpgWe sold poppies at the ceremony, and raised 2,850 CZK for the Poppy Day appeal in New Zealand

We also had the annual family lunch at VK Slavia on the Sunday. Another great event and well attended with a fantastic range of activities and entertainment on offer. We were joined for the day by former NZ Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Jim Bolger ONZ.

There are a whole range of photos of the event on our facebook photos page.

Prague Fringe - Friday 23 May to Saturday 31 May

Now in it’s 13th year, this always-popular festival once again graced the theatres of Mala Strana and showcase a diverse range of international performers from 13 countries including Australia.

CANZA was proud again to sponsor the Australian productions at this year's Fringe Festival.  The first Australian performance not to be missed was the comedy theatre show Cat Black, performed by local talents Stu Mentha and Peter Hosking. Both have have been performing at Fringe for quite a few years now and have had much critical aclaim from reviewers and audiences alike.

Cat Black is a new comedy from the creators of sell-out shows Deja Vu and False Friends. Set in the near-distant future, a grieving neuroscientist transfers the consciousness of his beloved pet cat Tinkerbell into the body of his dead wife. However, Tinkerbell turns out to be an edgy avant-garde visual artist with a mind of her own. Will their love prevail?
In English with Czech surtitles, text based by visual. Contains strong language.

'Extraordinary… superbly witty… brilliant' (Fringe Review on False Friends, Prague Fringe 2013)

Second were Australian beatbox and guitar sensations Tom Thum and Jamie MacDowell. One is good with his fingers; the other is good with his mouth! Jamie’s heartfelt and award-winning songwriting is elevated when combined with Tom’s heavy-hitting, world-class beatboxing. Playing off each other’s talents, Jamie and Tom are the perfect musical match; their show is made even stronger by their irresistible charm and wit. The performances are suitable for all ages so it might be one to bring older kids along to.
Music in English, little use of language, suitable for all ages.

‘See them now, because soon you won’t be able to get a ticket for love nor money’ (Broadway Baby).
‘We were astounded by what we were hearing and seeing’ (Lovemusiclovelife.com).

Tanec Praha - 4 June

CANZA was a partner of this year's TANEC Praha Festival which featured a performance of the internationally-renowned Australian dance company, LUCY GUERRIN INC which was followed by drinks (including a complimentary glass of Australian wine) attended by the mayor of Prague, Tomáš Hudeček.

Three dancers, three actors, and smartphones...

BELVOIR_ConversationPiece_MG_8038_copy_3_lowres.jpg

Three dancers and three actors in a choreography by Australian artist Lucy Guerin. The key prop – an iPhone and its apps. Tackling the theme of communication nowadays seems to be impossible without technology, which connects us and isolates us at the same time. Guerin has opened up a space in which spoken language meets the language of the body. In her choreography, danced and spoken sequences are recorded, can be rewound, repeated and complemented with music: incessantly adding new layers to the scenic vision. The spontaneous improvised conversations have the charm of natural and even slightly trivial everydayness, at the same time revealing the underlying, subtle structures of interpersonal relationships. The loose structure and improvisation make the piece different with every representation; what persists, however, is entertainment and suspense.

“There can be no doubt that Lucy Guerin, choreographer and director of this co-production, is a vital, important, influential and innovative choreographic and theatrical force.”

Lloyd Bradford Syke on Conversation Piece, Crikey, August 31, 2012
